I see the LCD vi is intended for use with the Sainsmart LCD controller.

Is there any possibility of support for Adafruit products?

As they are really the most popular and all of the Adafruit designs are open source both hardware and software.

I would like to see support for this type https://www.adafruit.com/products/772 as the MCP23017 chip to make any standard LCD in to one of these is like $1.50 at Digikey.
