The current code I am using has multiple typedefs, complies, and runs fine on the Arduino.  Was this a previous limitation or should they continue to be avoided?

The manual states: "Typedefs are also a great way to organize data structures. However, for the same reason as clusters are not supported, typedefs are not supported by the compiler either."

Yes; you should continue to avoid them if possible as they are not supported.
