Most likely it is an issue with the slave address of the LCD Module.  Some Modules ship with different addresses (usually 0x3F or 0x27).  And be careful about setting the value properly to hexadecimal or convert to decimal first if your control or constant is set to decimal.  Also be aware of 7-Bit I2C addressing and the direction bit as described here.
